R1 Oct 29 2016: vs Hibiscus Coast

Well, that’s that one over and done with.

Playing Hibiscus Coast at home first up a good way to get going for the season, even if the brisk breeze had a bit of a bite to it. Fortunately the Head Tosser won the toss so we got to watch  RTB and Basher Bounds get us off to a rollicking start and some well needed reminders on calling and running from the luxury of the boundary. Basher led the way and perished after a quickfire 37, brief cameo from Stu (more worried about what to get the lovely Victoria for her birthday - no Stu, scanning the clouds for ideas won’t help when you’re supposed to be hitting Donkey Drops over the rope). Cruncher Clarke came in and played some great shots to gee RTB up and add 40. Couple of small contributions from Planty and HT whilst Rob trundled along effortlessly to another, and first of the season, ton. Congratulations, Kaaskoppie. Breezy contributions from DLM and Spencer rounded off a substantial 268/6 and it was time for the real workhorses in the team to get to work.

Copious stretching enabled Wilson (Justin Bieber) in full sponsorship regalia open the innings with some 95 km/hr thunderbolts and the Manager opened at the other end in a holding role. Surprisingly little ring-rust from the doughty duo, but not much forthcoming in the first few overs so HT went to Spencer (Thunderbolt) Day to prise a wicket. I hesitate to say it, but what the f*#%, I will anyway, an element of ring-rust in Thunderbolt’s first couple of overs till he got grumpy and started using the top 3 inches to bring about a wicket with his slow, slow, slowest ball. At the other end Justin was winkling out wickets with clever bowling directing shots to well-placed fielders, which were duly caught if they were at the right height (dive, Planty, dive!). Neil suffered from a bit of ring-rust as well till the missiles started firing in the right spots and we were tying up HCCC, their chase becoming ever more problematic. Head then brought himself on upwind (thanks for that after those nachos) and Manager downwind to double his pace. A few more wickets dropped, not many more runs were scored, DLM bowled a complete over without hitting the roof of the nets and we were comfortable winners by 78 runs. It was also great to see Greg, Dan and Hitchie come down to support, coach, cajole the boys to the end.

Thanks to Hibiscus Coast for a game played in excellent spirit and also for coming back to the club and a good crack, even putting up with an iniquitous fines session conducted by HT. A good start, thanks for the supporting emails from guys that couldn’t make it, and onward and upward.
